Greg Lyon
Greg Lyon grew up in Melbourne Australia. He studied piano and guitar and played in bands in the thriving 1960’s music scene while at high school and university.
The years 1969-1974 were spent working in Asia and Europe . Apprenticed to many fine older musicians, he continued his studies in piano, bass .jazz and life. Highlights included residencies in Japan and freelancing in London.
In 1974 he moved back to Sydney Australia, where he quickly became one of the first-call session/studio bassists, recording and performing with artists such as Renee Geyer, Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Ricky May, Georgia Fame , Richard Clapton, Doug Parkinson ,Kerrie Biddell ,Doug Ashdown and many others. He also worked on hundreds of TV dates, jingles and movies.
During this time he helped form the award-winning jazz-fusion band CROSSFIRE with Jim Kelly and Michael Kenny. The band recorded several acclaimed albums, and toured nationally and internationally for many years.
After a short stint in the US , he moved to the idyllic seaside hub of Byron Bay ,on Australia’s east coast in 1984.-now home to creative types from around the globe .Here he began a dual career in academia, helping to create Australia’s first contemporary music degree course at Southern Cross University in Lismore NSW. For 20 years he was a full-time lecturer in music performance, theory and other academic roles, nurturing and mentoring hundreds of students , many of whom have gone on to successful music careers.
During his time in Byron Greg has continued to work in many musical situations- recording, writing and production, contracting and musical direction, teaching as well as leading his own bands .
Greg maintains a busy musical life, performing with many bands,touring,writing ,recording and producing . His latest album – Greg Lyon and The Hip Operation –Groovin’ was released in February 2014.
